Home Server

I’ve been working on setting up a home virtual server to run “single-purpose” virtual machines. This runs Debian 6 (Squeeze) for the base operating system, and Proxmox for the hypervisor. Here’s what I have for my current setup.

Gateway E-4620D

  • CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 @ 2.2GHz
  • RAM: 4GB (4x1GB) DDR2 800
  • OS/VM HDDs: 4x160GB Western Digital Blue SATA drives; configured in software RAID 10
  • Data/Backups HDD: 1TB Western Digital Green SATA Drive
  • NIC: Integrated Gigabit Ethernet
  • Optical Drive: DVD RW

Here are some of the things I use it for

  • File shares and backup storage
  • Media streaming and transcoding
  • Source control server
  • Database server
